Arne Slot has found Liverpool’s next ‘special’ signing as Real Madrid battle begins
Liverpool have been tipped to use the carrot of immediate first-team football to beat Real Madrid to sign "special" Rennes youngster Jeremy Jacquet.
Jacquet has been a breakthrough player in Ligue 1 since the beginning of the year, and while his level has dipped a little this term due to an ongoing groin problem, the Parisian remains a player that major European clubs are interested in.
Arsenal followed the 20-year-old in the summer before ultimately moving for Gabriel Mosquera, leaving Liverpool and Real Madrid as the major suitors for the young Frenchman.
Jeremy Jacquet seen as a special talent at Liverpool
“This will be a huge battle. Liverpool are not the only club involved. I’ve seen reports about Real Madrid, and that’s true – I can confirm they are also interested,” transfer expert Sacha Tavolieri told The RedMen TV.
“Liverpool are definitely in for him. They see him as a special player and have been very impressed by his ability to perform at such a high level at a young age. They already believe he can go straight into Liverpool’s first eleven, which is very interesting. This is not a situation like Giovanni Leoni, where a player arrives to sit on the bench. No, they see him coming in as a starter.
“As for Jeremy Jacquet, Liverpool feel he has something extra compared to other players. He reminds their scouts a little of Raphael Varane – a player who is very mature for his age, ready to step up, and capable of performing at the level Liverpool expect from a defender, at the very highest level.”
Real Madrid is unstable
Tavolieri warned Jacquet about the pitfalls of moving to Real Madrid – particularly with the club in its current state of turmoil.
He said: “In the end, it will be up to the player to decide what he wants to do with his career and how he wants to develop.
“Honestly, when you look at the situation at Real Madrid right now, with all the issues going on, I don’t know if it’s the right moment to join the club. The dressing room is not very stable at the moment, so that’s something to consider.”
Jacquet with something to prove
Liverpool are not in the best state themselves, though, with the pressure on Arne Slot after a disappointing start to the club’s Premier League title defence.
One of the major issues has been their defence, with the form of Virgil van Dijk but particularly Ibrahima Konate coming in for criticism.
It would be a big ask for Jacquet to step into the rearguard immediately, but he’s previously risen to every challenge before in his career and is a player earmarked for the very top.
He has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €16.2m, but this has risen dramatically since the start of the season and Liverpool will realistically be asked to pay significantly more than this if they are to snap him up from in-form Rennes.
