Morgan Rogers sends brutal transfer message to Chelsea
Morgan Rogers continued his immense recent form with a stunning brace during Aston Villa’s 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.
The England international has now scored seven goals and provided three assists in 17 Premier League matches so far this season, and he is a major reason why Unai Emery’s side are only three points behind league leaders Arsenal in the table.
Rogers, 23, was heavily linked with a Villa Park exit over the summer, however he ultimately remained at the club before opting to sign a lucrative new contract in November.
His new deal now runs until 2031 and football transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that a January transfer will not take place, despite significant transfer interest.
Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur both identified Rogers as a top target this summer, while Arsenal have been linked with a blockbuster move for the England superstar too.
For a while, however, Chelsea have been considered to be the frontrunners for Rogers’ signature if he leaves Aston Villa.
The Blues were in the market for a versatile attacking midfielder over the summer and they earmarked Rogers as the dream candidate for this role before learning that it would likely take over €100 million to finalise a deal.

After talks over deals for Xavi Simons and Fermin Lopez, Chelsea eventually signed Facundo Buonanotte on a season-long loan deal from Brighton & Hove Albion, having already bolstered their attack with the additions of Jamie Gittens, Alejandro Garnacho, Estevao Willian, Joao Pedro and Liam Delap.
However, their decision to end their pursuit of Rogers now looks incredibly foolish.
Morgan Rogers transfer message
Of course, Chelsea would have been forced to pay a hugely significant transfer fee to land Rogers over the summer, but the difference he could’ve made at Stamford Bridge is remarkable.
The Blues are currently fourth in the Premier League table, but it’s their second-string XI that is the real concern.
Wins over Lincoln City, Wolves and Cardiff City in the Carabao Cup were narrow and unconvincing, while Maresca’s back-up team suffered a humiliating defeat to Leeds United at the start of December.
Having Rogers’ star quality in poor results against Qarabag and Atalanta in the Champions League would also have made a huge difference, especially considering Cole Palmer’s injury woes so far this term.
Buonanotte, for what it’s worth, has only made one appearance in the Premier League this season and he has been excluded from Chelsea’s matchday squad on nine occasions in the English top flight since his arrival.
Rogers sent a fresh transfer message to Chelsea with his performance versus Man Utd and the Blues will no doubt be ruing a major error in the market for the next few years.
