Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim may have been handed the solution to his midfield problems on a plate, with one of his long-term targets set for a bargain transfer in January.

The Red Devils have been linked with a string of top central midfielders in the coming weeks, with Elliott Anderson, Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba all linked with big-money moves to Old Trafford. Furthermore, sources in Brazil suggest that a deal for Wolves’ Joao Gomes is close.

But now Man Utd have been told that Atalanta ace Ederson, a player they have been linked with since Erik ten Hag’s days at the club, is going cheap.

Ederson’s asking price slashed, agent reveals

“He’s close to the end of his contract, they could even lower his price by half, to between €30-40m, but he’s a spectacular player with some of the best stats in Europe for his position,” agent Andre Cury told Cadena SER.

“I think they’ll complete the transfer in this winter or summer window.”

Cury was touting Ederson with a move to Barcelona. The agent continued: “I think he could adapt very well to Barca’s system and contribute a lot of physicality and energy.”

What would Ederson give to Man Utd?

Ederson is the type of tireless, mobile midfielder capable of disrupting play that would seem to suit Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.

The Brazilian would be a like-for-like replacement for veteran Casemiro, who is out of contract at the end of the season and will probably not renew his deal with the club due to his extravagant wage demands.

The 26-year-old has 18 months left to run on his deal with Atalanta, where he notably starred in the Europa League final of 2024 in the upset win over Bayer Leverkusen.

His Serie A employers previously wanted around €80m for him, pricing United out of a move in the summer as they weighed up a deal for €60m, but his new asking price looks more realistic.

Nevertheless, Ederson’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) has fallen from a high of €60m to €39.1m, not only because his contract is expiring, but because his form with Atalanta has not been as impressive as it once was.
