Man Utd 'grant' Ruben Amorim transfer wish
Manchester United are ready to grant Ruben Amorim his wish of signing a new centre-back in 2026, according to a report.
The Red Devils have played 11 games so far this term, giving head coach Amorim a decent idea of where his team are at. After a dire start to the season, Man Utd have looked improved in recent outings and currently sit eighth in the Premier League.
This is probably a fair reflection of where they should be, given that there are still some glaring issues. Their game against Nottingham Forest at the weekend showed that their defence can be all over the place, with the second goal in particular not a good look.
The wing-back and centre-back positions are vitally important in Amorim's system, and he still hasn't found the perfect combination of players. Unsurprisingly, it is thought that Man Utd could dip into the market in January for a new wing-back.
However, according to TEAMtalk, a new centre-back is also on the 40-year-old's wishlist. In fact, Amorim has specifically requested that a new central defender be signed, and his wish has been granted.
Man Utd to sign new centre-back
Despite this, Amorim will not immediately get his new player. The report emphasises that Man Utd will resist the temptation of adding a centre-back in January because the midfield and wing-back positions are more pressing problems.
The Portuguese will have to wait until the summer, but that should not be a major issue as Man Utd already look well-stocked in the centre-back department.
Matthijs de Ligt has put in a few good performances this season, while Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven both have sky-high potential. Harry Maguire is valued for his leadership, and Amorim wants to keep him. However, he will have to take a pay cut to get a contract extension.
Lisandro Martinez is set to return from his ACL injury shortly, which will be a massive boost for the Red Devils and Amorim. There have been suggestions that he could move the Argentine into midfield, where he was previously used at Ajax, which may explain the desire to add a centre-back.
