€80m Man Utd target learns punishment after legal trouble
Manchester United target Karim Adeyemi has been instructed to do community work with a local youth team by Borussia Dortmund after being charged with illegal possession of weapons.
The 23-year-old recently hit the headlines when it emerged that he had been ordered by a court to pay a fine totalling €450,000 after a baton, three knives and two brass knuckles were found in a box from his home, the possession of which is illegal in Germany.
This court case was closed in October, but it has only become public knowledge over the past week and has caused a stir in the German media. Dortmund and the DFB did not immediately mete out a punishment as they wanted to get an explanation from Adeyemi.
It had been suggested that the player kept the weapons in his house because of previous break-ins, but Adeyemi has dispelled those rumours by openly admitting that he foolishly obtained them in 2024 via a so-called 'Mystery Box' he ordered online.
When Adeyemi was on holiday in Greece with his girlfriend, a friend was to pick up a box with cosmetics from his home, but airport police discovered that the friend had accidentally picked up the unopened 'Mystery Box.'
Adeyemi future not influenced by weapons incident
Dortmund CEO Lars Ricken believes that the matter has been somewhat blown out of proportion and should be put to bed. "He had to pay a hefty fine, nobody got hurt, and the player will not have a criminal record because of this," he is quoted as saying in a statement.
Nevertheless, Dortmund and the DFB have felt compelled to give the winger a symbolic punishment. He has been ordered to help local youth clubs train their youngsters as a form of community work.
Regarding his future at Dortmund, this incident is unlikely to be of any particular significance. Contract talks between the club and Adeyemi, who has been offered to Man Utd by his agent Jorge Mendes, continue, albeit piecemeal.
Sky Germany reported on Monday that, contrary to reports in England, Adeyemi was not pushing for a move to Man Utd and that an extension with Dortmund is still possible.
In a bid to keep Adeyemi, Dortmund are willing to go against club policy and give him the €80 million release clause Mendes has been demanding. Since Mario Gotze left for Bayern, they have only handed out release clauses to a select few players.
The bigger issue is the salary. Mendes is reportedly demanding an exorbitant weekly wage, and this is the real stumbling block in negotiations, not the desire to give his client a release clause.
