Man Utd get major January update as Crystal Palace talks opened
Rumoured Manchester United target Jean-Phillipe Mateta is officially in contract talks with Crystal Palace, according to a report.
The 28-year-old has emerged as one of the Premier League's most prolific strikers since the arrival of head coach Oliver Glasner at Crystal Palace in February 2024.
Mateta has scored 33 goals in 61 Premier League appearances under the Austrian, and this has naturally put his name on the map. Not only is he now an Olympic silver medallist and full-fledged France international, but he is also on the radar of big-name suitors.
Man Utd have been heavily linked with the late-bloomer in recent months, even after the expensive arrival of Benjamin Sesko. Given the Slovenian's youth, it has been suggested that the Red Devils could look to sign Mateta to provide experience and take the pressure off the youngster.
However, as things stand, a January move looks unlikely, not least because Ruben Amorim is unwilling to shake up his frontline mid-season. Joshua Zirkzee is pushing for a loan exit, but Amorim is refusing to sanction his exit, so there is no urgent need to sign another striker.
Crystal Palace open contract talks
Nevertheless, the future of Mateta continues to be a hotly debated topic. The Frenchman has just over 18 months left on his contract, and there is an awareness that time is running out for him to get a move to a truly elite club, given his age.
Mateta did not sound particularly enthusiastic about a potential extension at Crystal Palace when asked about it in October, instead insisting that his sole focus for the season was on making France's World Cup squad.
However, Sky Sports now reports that Crystal Palace have opened talks with Mateta's representatives over a new contract. It is emphasised that no agreement has been reached, but the Eagles are said to be calm about the situation.
Should Palace fail to secure a contract extension for Mateta, the upcoming summer is likely to be another damaging one for the Selhurst Park outfit.
Captain Marc Guehi is already confirmed to be leaving on a free transfer, and Mateta would have to be sold to avoid losing him for nothing in 2027.
