Scathing Sancho transfer verdict: Links with Man Utd flop a 'running gag'
Borussia Dortmund insiders have rubbished the latest links with Manchester United flop Jadon Sancho, who is struggling on loan at Aston Villa.
The former England international has endured a massive fall from grace since leaving Borussia Dortmund for €85 million in 2021. Sancho is unrecognisable from the exciting talent he once was.
After loan stints at his former club and Chelsea, Sancho joined Aston Villa in a panic transfer in the summer, and he is struggling for minutes in Birmingham. To date, he has not started a single Premier League fixture under Unai Emery.
As a result, Man Utd has decided to let Sancho leave the club for free next season. The Red Devils have an option to extend his contract by a year, but they will refrain from exercising it.
As is always the case when Sancho is available, links with Borussia Dortmund are not long in coming. However, it seems unlikely that three times will be a charm for the 25-year-old as the Bundesliga side currently have no interest in signing him.
Sancho links have become a 'running gag'
According to journalists Oliver Muller and Manfred Sedlbauer, the biannual links with Sancho have become a 'running gag' with little basis in reality at this point.
“It’s like Groundhog Day every six months,” Sedlbauer said. “Shortly before every transfer window, it has become customary in Dortmund to discuss Jadon Sancho.”
"He's no longer a hot commodity in the transfer market," Muller added, prompting Sedlbauer to quip: "Then BVB wouldn't really have much to lose."
"It's true that some fans long for it," Muller admits. "But it's not a realistic scenario. The fans always hope that the sight of the Phoenix-See [a lake in Dortmund] will ease his tension. But that's nothing more than a fairytale."
