In 2024, Eintracht Frankfurt beat Arsenal to the signing of Jean-Matteo Bahoya, but the Gunners could soon have the last laugh, according to German media.

The France youth international emerged as a breakout player at Angers in the 2023/24 season and left for Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt in an €8 million deal in January 2024.

The Eagles have a reputation for turning talented players into elite-level performers, and the hope was that Bahoya could become the next gem produced by Frankfurt.

At the time, Bahoya was also heavily linked with a switch to Arsenal, where he would have served as an understudy to Gabriel Martinelli. However, he prioritised the promise of regular game time over the allure of the Premier League.

Unfortunately for the 20-year-old, it hasn't really worked out for him in Frankfurt so far in his almost two years at the club. Bahoya has yet to establish himself as a regular starter and is said to be growing frustrated.

Bahoya considering his future

Initially, it appeared as though this could be his breakout season in Germany. The youngster was a starter for Frankfurt in the opening games of the campaign, and he started 2025/26 in stunning fashion by netting a brace against Werder Bremen.

The versatile attacker, who can play out wide and centrally, followed that up with an assist against Hoffenheim. At the time, he confidently stated that he was looking to score 20 goals this season.

Since August, though, Bahoya has not managed to find the back of the net a single time. His form slump has seen him demoted to a substitute role, while other attackers such as summer signings Ritsu Doan and Jonathan Burkhardt, as well as wonderkid Can Uzun, have impressed.

According to Sport1, Bahoya is growing increasingly frustrated with his role under head coach Dino Toppmoller and a departure in 2026 can no longer be completely ruled out.

Ideally, the youngster would like to stay and become a key player, but this looks unlikely to happen, especially as Frankfurt are chasing further attacking reinforcements in January, like Newcastle striker William Osula, who was already close to joining in the summer.

The German outlet explicitly states that Arsenal are still interested in Bahoya. However, Frankfurt are remaining calm as the 20-year-old is still under contract until 2029.

Sporting director Markus Krosche is a notoriously tough negotiator, so Arsenal would likely have to pay over the odds to land the Frenchman. He currently has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €27.4 million.
