Man Utd get perfect chance to sign Sesko rival as Amorim ‘priority’ admits he wants big move
Manchester United have been presented with the ideal opportunity to sign competition for Benjamin Sesko for the centre-forward role at Old Trafford, with Jean-Philippe Mateta admitting he would love a big move.
United followed the Crystal Palace striker during the summer transfer window, with Ruben Amorim even said to have made him a ‘priority’ target at one point.
Although Sesko has started to find the net for the Red Devils, there is a lack of competition for the No.9 jersey. Amorin could find this by taking Mateta up on his offer to move to one of the Premier League’s big guns.
Speaking to RMC Sport, the 28-year-old striker was asked if he would like to take a step up and admitted: “It’s natural. Every ambitious player wants to do that. Especially when you arrive in the national team and there are only players who play in the Champions League around you, who win the biggest trophies. When you’re surrounded by the best players in the world, naturally you want to play for the big clubs.”
Thierry Henry praise
Mateta is a player who has exploded late in his career, scoring 30 goals over the previous two Premier League seasons, and he claims Arsenal legend Thierry Henry played a significant role.
“He helped my progress a lot,” the former Lyon striker said of his former France Olympic boss. “I watched videos of his goals with him. And in these last two years, I’ve also had good results because the club and coach trust me. It’s a lot of hard work, too. But it’s not over. I want to achieve more.”
Could Mateta really move to Man Utd?
Mateta is the type of striker that Man Utd would love to have to support Sesko in an ideal world.
Adding another centre-forward to their ranks at this point of Ruben Amorim’s project, though, appears unlikely. While his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) is a comparatively cheap €30.9 million, the issue is that there are other areas of the side that need work first.
Amorim is crying out for a midfielder while the defence still needs work, pushing the possible signing of Mateta down the list of priorities.
Under contract with Crystal Palace until 2027, the next months promise to be a major crossroads in the striker’s career as he will have big decisions to make over his future.
