Romano drops Man Utd contract update as Amorim ally forced to take pay cut
Fabrizio Romano has reiterated that Harry Maguire will only be able to stay at Manchester United if he reduces his salary.
The 32-year-old has become a key player under embattled head coach Ruben Amorim. Despite not always starting, Maguire features regularly and has, at times, been something of a get-out-of-jail-free card for the Portuguese.
When things have gone wrong, Amorim has regularly resorted to throwing Maguire up top, and his towering presence has alleviated Man Utd's attacking woes on several occasions.
The centre-back has also been a key ally of the 40-year-old off the pitch. Maguire has repeatedly defended Amorim and his opinion-dividing tactical approach, blaming himself and his teammates rather than the coach's system.
Unsurprisingly, then, Amorim was desperate to keep Maguire in the summer, and he also wants him to remain at Old Trafford beyond 2026. Talks over an extension to his expiring contract are already in full swing.
Maguire will have to take pay cut
Pay increases typically accompany contract extensions, but transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has reiterated that this will not be the case with Maguire. He previously stated that a new deal is contingent on the England defender reducing his hefty salary.
"No," Romano told GIVEMESPORT when asked if Maguire could receive a pay rise. "It would have to be a different salary structure for Maguire in order to make it happen. Talks are taking place."
Maguire is believed to be Man Utd's fourth-highest earner with an annual net salary of €6.3 million. He can also earn an additional €1.6m in bonuses.
Given his advanced age, the Red Devils want to lower their expenditure on Maguire, who was, for a long time, the world's most expensive defender following his €87 million move in 2019. He was finally overtaken by Josko Gvardiol, who joined Man City for €90m in 2023.
