Ruben Amorim could be replaced by a shock candidate who has reportedly claimed he would be in the running to take over as Manchester United manager despite being a legend of their bitter rivals Manchester City.

Amorim has come under significant pressure after overseeing a sharp decline in United’s fortunes this season, although the club have insisted his position is not under immediate threat despite a poor start to the campaign.

However, this has not stopped speculation over his future and the reports have intensified this week, with The Sun reporting that former City boss Roberto Mancini has told friends that he could be in line to take over at Old Trafford if Amorim is sacked.

Mancini led City to their first trophy and Premier League title after their Arab takeover and the Italian has been out of work since leaving his role as Saudi Arabia manager last year.

But it is claimed that Mancini has a base in the south of France nearby United chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe, whom he has met at various social functions, prompting a belief of his chances in getting the job.

It remains to be seen how credible the links to Mancini are but much will depend on Amorim’s future and whether he can turn his fortunes at United around in the coming weeks.

Amorim not banking on Ratcliffe support to save Man Utd job

Ratcliffe spoke during the international break of his desire to keep hold of Amorim and give the Portuguese coach three years to make a significant impact at the club.

Amorim expressed his gratitude at the backing during his press conference on Friday but insisted that he was not taking Ratcliffe’s statement for granted as ‘football is not like that’.

“First of all, I can feel it, it is not just that thing that people talk [about]. I feel the support every day,” Amorim said. “I know it is going to take a while but I don't want to think like that,I said that last year.

“It is really good to hear that, I think it helps our fans understand that the leadership knows it will take a while but, at the same moment, I don't like that because it will give a feeling like we have time to work things out so I don't want that feeling here in our club.

“It is good to feel the support but we need to show people, at a big club, we are ready to win games.”
