The new Moises Caicedo? How the next €100m midfielder is set to light up the Premier League
Brighton have become known as a club with an instinct of finding young talent, so when the south coast club moves for a player, the Premier League takes note.
When the Seagulls offer a fee that flirts with their club record, teams really start to take notice.
That’s exactly what’s happened with Christos Mouzakitis, a young midfielder who is set to join a prestigious production line of talent from the AmEx Stadium that includes Moises Caicedo, Alexis MacAllister and now Carlos Baleba.
With the Cameroon youngster set to move for over €100 million next summer – Manchester United remain big fans – Brighton’s total transfer income from these players alone is set to top €250m. Their profit will be somewhere in the region of €200m.
Now the 18-year-old Mouzakitis is set to follow in those illustrious footsteps – or at least he will if the Seagulls get their way.
According to Nicolo Schira, Olympiacos have rejected an initial offer from Brighton for the player worth €40m.
This bid is a huge vote of confidence in a teenager who has already won multiple caps for Greece and has amassed 43 appearances for his club side, scoring two goals and creating six more.
With an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €16.7m, he is a fast-rising star, and it appears Brighton want to beat their competitors to the hot young talent. When minded like this, they normally do.
What makes Mouzakitis so special?
Mouzakitis is a player whose style can be compared to Brighton’s most famous midfielders of recent times. According to data analytics firm SciSports, he is closely aligned in style to the holy trinity of Caicedo, Mac Allister and Baleba – three players currently starring in the Premier League for different teams.
Although not yet a regular starter for Olympiacos, he has caught the eye with his passing this season, delivering two assists and showing a consistent capacity to create opportunities for his team-mates in the league minutes he has earned.
Mentally, he also appears to be a player built for the big occasion. During last season’s Europa League, he posted a decisive pass against Porto in the group stage and then two as Olympiacos fought back unsuccessfully from a 3-0 first-leg deficit in the opening knockout stage.
How good can he become?
Mouzakitis has the potential not only to become a starter for Brighton, but one of their very best players, according to SciSports.
What the Seagulls will be most interested in is that he has a ceiling that would allow him to become a first-team regular at almost any Premier League club. And that’s before they’ve got their hands on him. Brighton will be confident of being able to get even more out of the teenager, who will celebrate his 19th birthday on Christmas Day.
Could we see a hijack attempt?
Don’t rule it out. The Premier League’s big clubs will be looking at Brighton’s interest in the Greek and planning on cutting out the middleman.
Man Utd, who are after his type of midfielder, will surely be taking a look, while Chelsea could use a proper Caicedo backup, so why not get someone who is a like-for-like fit?
SciSports suggests Bournemouth would be a smart fit for Mouzakitis. The Cherries are given a Club Fit score of 80, which is based on a wide variety of factors, including potential development, playing time, style and formation. Given Andoni Iraola’s side have a burgeoning reputation as a club where stars can grow, this might not be such a bad move.
Brighton, meanwhile, lag behind Newcastle with a very commendable score of 72, putting them firmly in the picture for this bright young star, who has the potential to become the next great Premier League midfielder.
