Martin Odegaard sets unwanted record in Arsenal win over West Ham
Martin Odegaard became the first player in Premier League history to be substituted before half-time in three consecutive matches after suffering yet another injury on Saturday.
Arsenal continued their good form in a comfortable 2-0 win over West Ham to not only maintain their title challenge but to really put the pressure on Liverpool, who had to play Chelsea half an hour later.
Captain Martin Odegaard led the team out onto the pitch, but his workday was cut short once again when he had to come off the pitch with a knee injury after 30 minutes.
He thus became the first player in Premier League history to be substituted before half-time in three consecutive games, having also suffered injuries against Nottingham Forest and Newcastle.
He came off with a shoulder problem against Forest in mid-September and subsequently missed three games in all competitions. He returned against Newcastle last weekend but lasted just eight minutes after again struggling with his shoulder.
Is Odegaard becoming a problem for Arsenal?
Odegaard's fitness will be a headache for Mikel Arteta, considering that he missed two months of action last season in what served as a major blow to the Gunners' title challenge.
However, Arsenal are much better equipped to absorb the captain's fitness problems after a massive summer window and following the emergence of Ethan Nwaneri in Odegaard's absence last term.
Arsenal defeated Athletic Club and Port Vale and snatched a late draw against Man City in the three games that the 26-year-old missed earlier this season, so they will back themselves to continue their good form even without the midfielder.
After the win over West Ham, Arteta said: "With Martin, I think it was a clash knee-to-knee, and it's not looking very positive at the moment." Declan Rice also requested to be substituted due to back pain.
