Newcastle plot STUNNING €90m transfer raid on Barcelona
Newcastle are plotting an audacious €90 million transfer assault on Barcelona.
Having endured a frustrating summer 2025 when they lost out on several top targets, Newcastle want 2026 to be much more fruitful and to that end are looking to raid Barcelona for one of their elite talents.
TeamTalk have reported that Newcastle are ready to make a club record bid worth up to a frankly astonishing €90 million for Euro 2024-winner Dani Olmo.
This transfer would eclipse the fee paid for Nick Woltemade this summer and become a new record for the Magpies. It would also provide them the one chess piece they genuinely lack, an elite no. 10.
While Newcastle's squad is very well built to play fast and direct football with bundles athleticism and aggression across many positions but particularly in midfield where Eddie Howe has three snarling pitbulls ready to rock, it is short a genuine creative wizard.
For now that's fine, as Newcastle's style means they have no need for someone there. But football sides must always be evolving, and it seems as though Eddie Howe is already planning to transition his side into one that has a creative no. 10 at the heart of it.
And it would seem he wants Dani Olmo to be that creative no. 10.
Dani Olmo's strange career path
Dani Olmo re-joined Barcelona in summer 2024 having grown up in their youth system, the famed La Masia, but leaving at the age of 16 to play for Dinamo Zagreb.
Olmo took a huge risk to guarantee first-team football but it worked out for the young man as he developed rapidly playing in Croatia.
This earned him a move to RB Leipzig where he spent four good albeit injury-ravaged years in the Bundesliga before his big move back to Catalunya.
Despite persistent issues surrounding his registration with La Liga, Olmo's first season in Barcelona was a tremendous success as he bagged a career-high 12 goals and helped the Blaugrana win La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Supercup and had them within two minutes of a first Champions League final since 2015.
However, this season Olmo's place in the starting XI is under threat from Fermin Lopez (not to mention youngsters Dro and Toni Fernandez) so the idea that Olmo might be receptive to a big move to Newcastle isn't that far-fetched.
