Fabrizio Romano announces final twist in Rodrygo transfer saga
Manchester City are closing in on a new contract for Savinho, effectively putting to bed any chance of a move for Real Madrid superstar Rodrygo for the foreseeable future, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Cityzens plotted an ambitious summer move for the Los Blancos winger due to his uncertain position under new head coach Xabi Alonso, with the Brazilian having spent most of the Club World Cup on the bench.
However, the transfer window came and went, and no deal materialised. Despite Pep Guardiola's well-documented admiration of the 24-year-old, Man City opted to keep faith in the options already at their disposal, chiefly Savinho.
The 21-year-old was pursued by Tottenham, who were prepared to pay more than €70 million for the youngster. A sale would have allowed Man City to seek a deal for Rodrygo, but the Etihad club ultimately decided not to cash in on Savinho.
Arsenal, too, were credited with an interest in Rodrygo, but they instead signed Eberechi Eze and look well-stocked on the left wing for a while, unless they decide to offload Gabriel Martinelli next year.
Man City to hand Savinho a new contract
According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Man City are poised to hand Savinho a new contract, which would effectively put to bed any talk of a Tottenham move for the foreseeable future.
Spurs have been linked with a deal for 2026, but this now looks incredibly unlikely as Romano reports that an agreement over a new Man City contract is already close.
Savinho's current terms expire in 2029. His new deal is expected to run until 2031 and will naturally also have consequences for the future of Rodrygo as Man City are unlikely to pursue him again after tying his compatriot down long-term.
This means that both Man City and Arsenal are out of the picture, making a Premier League move increasingly unlikely. That said, Rodrygo's situation hasn't massively improved, having only started two games so far this season.
Should this persist, he is likely to be in the headlines again in 2026. Liverpool were tentatively linked with a move in the summer, while PSG are known admirers of him, so there could yet be a blockbuster move on the cards in the future.
