€80m Liverpool target makes huge commitment after agreeing deal
Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo is ready to stay with the club for the rest of his career despite 'genuine' interest from Liverpool, according to Spanish media.
The Uruguay international has emerged as a target for the Reds, who are in the market for a new centre-back after missing out on Marc Guehi in the summer and following Giovanni Leoni's ACL injury. The expiring contract of Ibrahima Konate adds further urgency to the matter.
Several high-profile defenders are being linked with a 2026 transfer to Anfield, including Araujo. On Friday, it was revealed that Liverpool's rumoured interest in the 26-year-old is 'genuine.'
He will be available in January due to a special release clause that was inserted into his deal when he signed an extension at the start of the year. His previous €1 billion release clause dropped down to €65 million for the summer and €80m for January 2026.
Should Liverpool opt to trigger his clause, the decision of whether or not to make the move would be squarely up to Araujo. Unfortunately for the Reds, it seems the defender has little interest in heading to England.
Araujo to retire at Barcelona?
According to Mundo Deportivo, Araujo is 'committed to Barcelona until 2031 and beyond.' The Spanish publication states that the 26-year-old would ideally like to end his career in Catalunya.
The report points to his contract extension in January as something of a watershed moment. Juventus tried to sign him, and he would have been reluctantly open to the move, but when given the final decision by Barcelona, he decided to stay for the long haul and pen fresh terms.
Given the tense situation with Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, Araujo is Barcelona's de facto captain at present, and he dreams of lifting the Champions League with the Blaugrana.
After previously losing his place to Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi, he is now 'fully integrated' into Hansi Flick's team and has no interest in leaving.
