Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner insists that he did not threaten to quit the club during the talks with Liverpool over Marc Guehi.

The Eagles captain was at the heart of one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer window. Guehi's contract expires next year, so Crystal Palace planned to sell him before the end of the window.

Liverpool were at the front of the queue for the England star, but talks with Palace dragged on for weeks. The London club's inability to find a suitable replacement meant that the Guehi situation went right to the wire.

On Deadline Day, Palace managed to agree a deal with Brighton for Igor, and the Brazilian even underwent his medical. However, when West Ham came calling, he opted to join them instead.

Guehi, too, had completed his medical with Liverpool ahead of a €40 million move, but the collapse of the Igor deal meant that Palace did not grant their captain permission to join the reigning Premier League champions.

Glasner: I never threatened to quit

It has since been claimed by several reliable sources, including Fabrizio Romano, that Palace head coach Oliver Glasner told chairman Steve Parish that he would quit the club if Guehi was sold without replacement.

However, Glasner has now sought to set the record straight ahead of Saturday's match with Sunderland. "I think it’s the last time I want to talk about it," the Austrian began.

"Especially the Crystal Palace fans deserve to really hear how it was. So many things were written and told. Number one: I never threatened to leave the club. Never.

"And the second thing is, at the end of the many discussions, the chairman asked me, 'Oliver, do you think we can manage this season when we sell Marc?'

"And I said: 'Steve, honestly, I think we can't manage it in the short-term if we buy a 19-year-old fantastic player [Jaydee Canvot] with about 1000 minutes in Ligue 1 and selling our captain with about 15,000 minutes in the Premier League.

"'I think we can't manage it short-term, and if then we have three centre-backs with our schedule, and if we have an injury in the back-three, I think it's very, very risky. If you want this scenario for Palace and you are fine with it, sell Marc. If you don't want this for Palace, then we have to keep him.'

"And then he decided we keep him, so big credit to the chairman. I didn't have to threaten anybody, there were no tensions between the chairman and myself. It was really just a discussion about sports, and big credit that he decided against the money and for the sporting perspective of Palace.

"At least the same big credit to Marc, who handled it very well. We talked on Deadline Day, we talked the day after Deadline Day when he was already in the England camp. They were always very honest talks, the same like before."
