Konate in talks for Real Madrid free transfer as 'contract offered'
Ibrahima Konate has made it clear to Liverpool that he will leave the club at the end of the season, and he plans to join Real Madrid on a free transfer.
That is according to Nicolo Schira, who reports on Tuesday that Konate will not sign a new contract at Anfield.
Schira adds that Real Madrid are currently in talks to sign Konate in July 2026.
They have offered the French defender a contract until 2031.
Konate is keen on the move and has also recently turned down a huge bid from a Saudi Arabian club.
Konate to leave Liverpool
Despite signing Dean Huijsen, Alvaro Carreras and Trent Alexander-Arnold this summer, Real Madrid are still not completely satisfied with their defensive options.
They plan to make at least one big defensive signing in the summer of 2026 and Konate represents a bargain as his contract Liverpool will be up.
The Anfield club appears to be bracing itself for Konate’s departure. After signing Giovanni Leoni from Parma, Arne Slot’s men also tried to bring in Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace this summer and they will likely return for him in January.
Konate's situation echoes that of Alexander-Arnold, who ran down his contract at Liverpool before signing for Real Madrid on a free transfer.
Liverpool signed Konate from Leipzig in 2021 for €42 million.
He has since gone on to make almost 150 appearances for the club, scoring five goals and winning five trophies.
This includes the Premier League this past season. He also has a Champions League runners-up medal.
Konate has 24 caps for France. He is now 26.
