Wirtz reveals what Slot told him about his €125m Liverpool price tag
Florian Wirtz has revealed what Arne Slot said to him about his whopping Liverpool price tag amid his ongoing struggles to acclimatise to life in the Premier League.
The Germany international joined the Reds in the summer in a then-British record €125 million move, with the fee capable of rising in excess of €135m if all bonuses are triggered.
That record was short-lived as Liverpool again splashed the cash to sign Alexander Isak for €145m just weeks later, but the immense price tag of Wirtz has nevertheless brought with it significant pressure.
Regarded as one of Europe's brightest talents, the 22-year-old was expected to immediately raise the level of Liverpool's attack. However, he has so far struggled to recapture his scintillating Bayer Leverkusen form.
Wirtz's adaptation to the Premier League is taking longer than many had anticipated, himself included. Liverpool play a very different brand of football to Leverkusen, so the youngster is still in the process of forming relationships with his teammates.
Wirtz sick of hearing about needing time
The prevailing narrative is that Wirtz simply needs more time to acclimatise to English football, but speaking to Sky Germany, the player has revealed that he is already sick of hearing about it.
The ambitious attacker knows what he wants, and he wants it now. He is aware that he hasn't lived up to expectations and is determined to rectify it as soon as possible.
"I hear it a lot, and if I'm being honest, I don't really want to constantly hear about it," he said in response to the interviewer sharing a word of advice from Jurgen Klopp about being patient.
"'Give him time! Give him time!' I will keep trying to be better than before. Sometimes, you just have those phases where things are going against you. It's no secret that I would have liked to have had more [goals and assists] by now, but I'm patient and I know that I'm good at football.
When quizzed about his enormous price tag, he said: "It is what it is. You're maybe not used to Liverpool spending that much, especially in recent years, but that's why they were able to do so this summer.
"There are a lot of players here who were bought for big money. Of course, it's not normal that a player costs that much. Everybody knows that. But that's the going rate right now.
"The manager also told me that, in this squad, you don't need to feel pressure about how much you cost because pretty much everybody around would cost exactly the same if they were playing anywhere else."
