Chelsea handed HUGE update on Fermin Lopez pursuit
Manchester City are reportedly eager to rival Chelsea for the signing of Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez during the January transfer window.
Fermin, 22, was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea this summer, but he opted to snub interest from Enzo Maresca’s side in favour of remaining at Barcelona, despite his lack of consistent game time this campaign.
The Spain international was identified as Chelsea’s first-choice transfer target following Xavi Simons’ move to Tottenham Hotspur and the Blues are reportedly prepared to go “all out” for Fermin in 2026.
Football transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Chelsea will rekindle their interest in Fermin next year, although Man City are set to compete with the Blues for his signature.
That is according to Fichajes, who report that Pep Guardiola is eager to bring Fermin to the Etihad Stadium in January.
Chelsea are ready to pay €80m to land the 22-year-old during the January window, but Man City are also interested and they have reportedly earmarked him as one of their top targets, despite the summer arrivals of both Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki.
Fermin Lopez happy to stay at Barcelona
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo while on international duty with Spain, Fermin confirmed why he chose to remain at Barcelona this summer.
“My priority has always been to be at Barcelona. I arrived when I was 12; it was my dream to be here, to be able to reach the first team,” Fermin said.
“It’s always a compliment when there’s interest from other clubs, but the truth is, I always had the idea of staying at Barca and being able to succeed here.”
Lamine Yamal also discussed Chelsea's interest in Fermin and confirmed that his Barcelona team-mate never intended to join the Blues. “He’s fine and happy as ever,” Yamal admitted.
"At Barca, if anyone leaves, it’s their own decision. We’re a young, close-knit group with no problems between us, and we enjoy being at the club we’re at, so I don’t think anyone wants to leave.
"We jokingly asked him what was going on with England, but he told us he wanted to stay, that he was happy.”
