It’s only a week into the Premier League season, but it appears there is already a winner for the sack race, with a major club “considering” the future of their manager.

Although they have enjoyed a spectacular rise in recent years, Nottingham Forest are reported to be mulling over the future of boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Portuguese has been vocal in his criticism of the board at the City Ground for failing to act quickly in the transfer window.

Forest are a side that has become known for their spectacular and sometimes controversial approach in the transfer market. They went on an enormous spending spree when they first won promotion to the Premier League two years ago and backed that up last summer by splashing out more than €100 million.

But Espirito Santo was left cool by the club’s slow progress this season and last week hit out at the management of the team.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “We are very far - very, very far - from where we should be. We are very far in terms of preparation, in terms of planning, in terms of the squad.

“So we are all very worried that in two or three days time we are playing for the Premier League, the most demanding competition in the world. And we are very far. Very, very far.”

Tension at the City Ground over transfer policy

Matteo Moretto claims this could cost the 51-year-old his job.

“Nottingham Forest is considering sacking Nuno Espírito Santo,” he reports on X.

“Tensions between the ownership and the Portuguese coach, also stemming from certain signings during this transfer window.

“The English club is already evaluating other coaches.”

Ironically, Forest have since been prolific in the transfer market since Santo’s outburst.

Last weekend, they signed James McAtee, Omari Hutchinson and Arnaud Kalimuendo for a combined fee of virtually €100m.

It means that Forest have spent more this summer than ever before, yet Santo’s frustration at the timing of the deals could cost him his job.
