EXCLUSIVE: Tottenham accelerate for Elliott as three options to replace Maddison emerge
Tottenham Hotspur are making significant progress in their pursuit of Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott, with talks between the clubs given new urgency due to James Maddison’s ACL injury, FootballTransfers can reveal.
Maddison faces missing the majority of the season following the serious knee problem, which was sustained last weekend in a friendly against Newcastle.
Even before the England international was struck down, though, discussions between Tottenham and Liverpool for Elliott were advancing. Thomas Frank had gone so far as to personally outline his plans for the 22-year-old star.
Frank makes Elliott promise he can’t resist
Sources close to the deal have confirmed that Frank held direct conversations with Elliott last week, in which he pitched a vision of deploying the Liverpool attacking midfielder in the No.10 role. The former Brentford boss, recently installed at Spurs, is said to be a strong admirer of Elliott’s technical quality and sees him as central to his attacking plans.
Elliott, who made only two Premier League starts for Liverpool last season, is understood to be keen on securing regular first-team football and views a switch to Tottenham as an ideal opportunity to stake a claim for a place in England’s World Cup squad next year.
FootballTransfers has learned that Liverpool are open to selling Elliott for a fee in the region of €46 million (£40m), with the Reds insistent on including a buy-back clause in any deal. Sources suggest Tottenham are willing to meet all of Liverpool’s demands on this front, a key factor in the positive trajectory of negotiations.
The midfielder has been on Spurs’ radar for some time, but interest has intensified in recent days.
Garnacho and Grealish remain other options
Tottenham also remain admirers of Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho, though the player’s current preference appears to be a move to Chelsea.
As FootballTransfers revealed previously, Spurs had expressed firm interest in the Argentine international. However, following Heung-min Son’s announcement departure, sources believe Tottenham could re-enter the race if a deal can't be agreed with Chelsea.
While the Stamford Bridge side are believed to be Garnacho’s first choice at present, the situation remains fluid - particularly with Champions League football and a guaranteed starting role potentially on offer in north London.
Spurs are also keeping tabs on Manchester City’s Jack Grealish, though any move for the England international remains in the balance due to wage concerns.
Grealish is believed to be open to a new challenge. Tottenham are monitoring the situation closely and would be prepared to formalise their interest - provided some compromise can be reached on the player’s current salary demands.
A deal for Grealish would likely be more complex than that for Elliott or Garnacho, but sources insist the club are not ruling it out.
Tottenham to make moves
With Frank now firmly at the helm and a clear mandate to reshape the squad, Tottenham’s summer transfer activity is heating up. Elliott is now seen as the most realistic near-term addition, while Garnacho and Grealish remain possibilities.
Spurs fans could be in for an exciting final few weeks of the window as the club push forward with plans to revamp their attacking line-up, backed by a strong belief that Champions League football and a new tactical approach can attract some of Europe’s top young talent.
