Inigo Martinez's unexpected departure from Barcelona has completely changed the future of Andreas Christensen, according to Spanish media.

Heading into this transfer window, the Denmark international was almost guaranteed to be on the move. Christensen was deemed surplus to requirements and one of the most likely candidates to depart in Barcelona's bid to free up space for new signings.

However, with the window set to close in just a matter of weeks, Christensen is still at Barcelona, and it is instead Inigo Martinez who is on his way out. Earlier this week, the shocking news broke that the veteran defender had agreed a move to Al-Nassr.

The reports of his deal with Cristiano Ronaldo's side hit like a bomb in Catalunya, as Martinez was a vitally important part of Hansi Flick's treble-winning side last season. What's more, he only signed a new contract in March that was set to keep him at Barcelona until 2026.

As part of this new deal, Martinez was reportedly able to utilise a clause allowing him to complete a free transfer to Saudi Arabia, which will see Barcelona save a decent chunk of money on his wages. This is crucial as they are once again struggling to register their new signings.

Christensen now a key player

With Martinez set to depart, Flick will now have to rely more on Christensen, and Sport reports that the 29-year-old's 'situation has completely turned around' in light of recent events.

The former Chelsea star is now expected to feature heavily this season and to play a crucial role as Barcelona seek to defend their LaLiga title. Indeed, he is described by the report as being 'indispensable' to the Blaugrana going forward.

The Catalan outlet goes so far as to suggest that Barcelona could look to extend Christensen's contract, with his current terms set to expire next summer. That said, it is acknowledged that there is 'no rush' to finalise a new deal for the versatile defender.

Christensen has been approached by clubs from Saudi Arabia and the Premier League this summer, but he refused to engage with suitors because he wants to see out his Barcelona contract. It remains to be seen if he is willing to extend his stay beyond next summer.
