Alexander Isak: Newcastle legend Alan Shearer breaks silence on transfer controversy
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has weighed in on the debate surrounding striker Alexander Isak, who is refusing to train as he seeks to force a move to Liverpool.
Isak was not present as Newcastle were held 0-0 against 10-man Aston Villa in their opening Premier League fixture of the season, and also did not take part in any friendly matches for Eddie Howe’s side.
The 25-year-old Sweden international even travelled to San Sebastian during the summer to train alone for a period at former club Real Sociedad.
Shearer, who is the Premier League’s all-time record scorer thanks in large part due to a prolific spell at Newcastle, says his heir at St James’ Park needs to take a good look at himself.
Speaking on the BBC’s Match of the Day, Shearer said: “Alex is not going about it the right way at all.
“You have to feel sorry for the players and the manager. The players were busting a gut for the football club, for the thousands of fans who travelled to Villa Park. They’re giving their all yet they’re looking at another player, wherever he is, refusing to play, despite having a three-year contract and on over £100,000 a week. You can imagine the fans are feeling. You can’t do that when you’ve got a three-year contract.
“I understand there are two sides to every story, and we’ve not heard anything from him. It’s always leaks or briefing from other people.”
Is there any way back for Isak?
Shearer says the door at Newcastle is not closed for Isak, but the clock is ticking.
“There’s a small chance he could be integrated back into the team if he wants to say sorry. I don’t know. It’s unlikely, but if it gets past Deadline Day, and there’s still a deadlock, I can’t see a way back. It becomes: ‘I have to be here because we can’t find a solution to it.’ Newcastle haven’t been able to bring in the two centre-forwards they want to allow him to leave.”
Isak is expected to fetch a British record fee if he signs for Liverpool from Newcastle, with the Premier League champions already having had a bid of €130 million rejected.
