Liverpool reach broad agreement to sign Hugo Ekitike - David Ornstein
Liverpool have reached 'the outline of an agreement' to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, according to David Ornstein.
The Reds are keen to add a prolific No.9 to their lineup this summer. Darwin Nunez has flattered to deceive since his arrival in 2022, and the heartbreaking passing of Diogo Jota has given the need for a new forward a tragic urgency.
Liverpool initially planned to sell Nunez before dipping into the market for a striker - given that they have already spent north of €200 million on new recruits this summer - but this week the decision was made to act now.
The Reds kicked off the week with an approach for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, but the Magpies maintained their not-for-sale stance. While Liverpool remain attentive to the Swede's situation, they have pivoted to Hugo Ekitike.
The Anfield club had an opening bid for the Frenchman rejected earlier this week, and they returned with an improved bid worth around €90 million earlier on Saturday.
Liverpool reach broad Ekitike agreement
According to transfer insider David Ornstein of The Athletic, a broad agreement between Liverpool and Eintracht Frankfurt has been reached in the wake of the Reds' new offer.
The deal still needs to be formally agreed, but the basic structure of Ekitike's move to Anfield is in place, with both clubs keen to get everything sorted within the next 24 or so hours.
Frankfurt are confident that the final fee will exceed the €95m they received from PSG for Randal Kolo Muani as they have always maintained that they won't sell Ekitike for less than €100m.
Ekitike has already agreed personal terms with Liverpool and is understood to be very keen on joining the Premier League champions, despite being a boyhood fan of rivals Man Utd.
