Chelsea striker Marc Guiu will spend the upcoming season on loan at Sunderland, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Spanish youngster has become something of a forgotten man at Stamford Bridge. Signed as a 'market opportunity' last summer as he was available for just €6 million due to a release clause, Guiu has struggled for consistent minutes.

The 19-year-old has found himself far down the offensive pecking order at Chelsea, and a move away this summer has been inevitable for some time. Indeed, earlier this window, there was talk of a potential switch to Ipswich as part of the deal that saw Liam Delap head to West London.

However, the Blues have now decided that it would be better for Guiu to remain in the Premier League rather than drop down to the Championship.

According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea and Sunderland have agreed a season-long loan deal for the striker that will see him become the Black Cats' ninth new recruit of the summer.

Sunderland sign Guiu

Romano reports that Sunderland will cover the entirety of Guiu's salary as he will be 'an important striker' for the promoted side. However, the deal is a straight loan, so he won't stay at the Stadium of Light beyond the upcoming season as things stand.

Indeed, Chelsea are desperate for the Spaniard to return next summer as they believe that he can still develop into a key player for them, Romano claims.

As for Sunderland, Guiu will be another high-profile signing for Regis Le Bris. Sunderland have already spent north of €130 million on new arrivals this summer, most recently snapping up ex-Arsenal star Granit Xhaka for €15m.

The Black Cats have shattered their transfer record twice this summer, first on Enzo Le Fee (€23m) and then on Habib Diarra (€31.5m). Since then, Simon Adingra has also arrived for a sizeable €24.4m.
