Enzo Maresca has dropped another hint that he has lost faith in Nicolas Jackson by only naming him as a substitute against Fluminense.

The Senegal international is facing an uncertain future at Chelsea. Not deemed untouchable by the Blues hierarchy, Jackson could be sold should a suitable offer arrive.

So far this summer, Chelsea have signed two players in his position worth a combined €105 million, and it has seen the 24-year-old plummet down the pecking order.

Jackson was sent off during the Club World Cup group stage - his second red card in a matter of weeks - and subsequently lost his place to new signing Liam Delap.

The Blues then added Joao Pedro for €70m, and even he is already ahead of Jackson in Maresca's thinking. Against Palmeiras in the Club World Cup quarter-final, it was Pedro - who wasn't even match fit - who came on as a substitute for Delap in the second half.

Maresca starts Pedro over Jackson

Although Pedro kept himself in shape with a personal trainer prior to his move to Chelsea, he has played very little actual football in recent weeks, so Maresca's decision to bring him on over Jackson was a surprise given the money at stake in the Club World Cup.

Now, Maresca has dropped another hint that it may be curtains for Jackson at Chelsea as he has opted to start Pedro over the Senegal star in the semi-final clash against Fluminense, which Delap will miss due to yellow card accumulation.

Maresca's decision was eagerly anticipated as it was made clear in the build-up to the game that picking Pedro over Jackson could have huge implications for the latter's future.

Maresca's actions now suggest that Jackson could indeed be on the way out. The striker is known to have big-name admirers around Europe, and while signing him will require a significant outlay, Jackson - who is still under contract until 2033 - won't be happy to only be third-choice.
