Viktor Gyokeres has spoken about his anticipated return to the Premier League as the Sporting CP striker continues to be AWOL to force through a transfer to Arsenal.

The Sweden international has been the protagonist of one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer, a saga everyone involved hopes is coming to an end shortly.

Gyokeres is Arsenal's top target, but talks with Sporting CP have not been straightforward. The player has accused the Lisbon giants of reneging on an agreement to let him leave for €70 million this summer, which has complicated his move away.

Sporting now insist on a fixed fee of €70m plus sizeable add-ons, totalling a sum of around €80m. Talks with Arsenal have been non-stop in recent days, and it is expected that the Gunners will eventually cough up the money.

Amid all of this, Gyokeres has essentially been on strike. The 27-year-old has repeatedly told Sporting that he will never play or train for them again, and he was given extra time off to help facilitate his transfer.

Gyokeres wants Premier League revenge

However, his move has still not been finalised, so Sporting have asked Gyokeres to report for pre-season training today, Saturday. However, as expected and widely reported, the striker is refusing to show up.

Gyokeres has already agreed a five-year contract with Arsenal and is waiting for the clubs to find common ground on his transfer fee. An agreement should come shortly, with the Gunners expecting to have Gyokeres available for their pre-season tour of Asia.

The Swede, for his part, can't wait to have another chance to prove himself in the Premier League after an unsuccessful stint at Brighton. “It’s one of the biggest leagues in Europe," Gyokeres has told L'Equipe in a fresh interview.

"I spent several years there without being able to play a single match. So, of course, it’s something I’d like to do. It would be great revenge!” However, despite his much-publicised antics, the forward refused to confirm that he is pushing for a move away from Sporting.

“Maybe," Gyokeres responded when asked if he would be on the move this summer. "That’s football, you never know. I don’t think about it; we’ll see what happens. If something happens, it will. The most important thing for me is to play for a club that really wants me.”

Gyokeres also expressed his admiration for players in the Premier League, especially his potential future teammates at Arsenal. "Midfielders like Bernardo Silva, [Mateo] Kovacic at City, or [Bukayo] Saka at Arsenal are impressive to watch.

"I’ve also faced very high-level defenders, like Gabriel [Magalhaes] and [William] Saliba. It’s a chance to play against those kinds of players.”
