Arteta makes EXCITING transfer confession after Newcastle victory
Mikel Arteta dropped a transfer hint following Arsenal’s 3-2 victory over Newcastle United on Sunday that suggest the Gunners will be active again in the market.
In Arsenal’s second summer friendly, Arteta watched his side claim a second victory as Mikel Merino, an own goal and a late Martin Odegaard penalty helped them to overcome their Premier League rivals.
The Gunners have already spent nearly €170 million, with the marquee addition of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP confirmed on Saturday. He joins Martin Zubimendi, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Norgaard and Kepa Arrizabalaga as new faces in the North London squad this season.
Gyokeres might not have been present on the field for the Gunners, but he was present for the clash and may be available to debut against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.
But Arteta has said the Swede may not be his last summer signing.
“Let's see. The market is still going on and we'll have to balance out the squad as well. I think we'll be open to see what happens,” Arteta told the media after the game.
Player | From | Fee |
---|---|---|
Viktor Gyokeres | Sporting Cp | €73.5m |
Martin Zubimendi | Real Sociedad | €70m |
Noni Madueke | Chelsea | €55.4m |
Cristhian Mosquera | Valencia | €15m |
Christian Norgaard | Brentford | €12m |
Kepa Arrizabalaga | Chelsea | €5.8m |
What signings could Arteta still make?
Arsenal are likely to focus on a wide attacker as an additional signing before the transfer deadline.
The Gunners have regularly been linked with Real Madrid star Rodrygo, while they continue to lack a natural backup for star player Bukayo Saka. There are ongoing concerns about the England international’s huge workload.
FootballTransfers exclusively revealed that Arteta has performed a U-turn on Oleksandr Zinchenko and Leandro Trossard. Both are now likely to remain at the club having been earmarked to depart.
With this in mind, Arteta could still seek the addition of another central midfielder player or perhaps a right-back should the correct opportunity arise before the window shuts on 1 September.
