Arsenal could break a long-standing transfer record this summer in a move that could see the Gunners wind up by landing Real Madrid winger Rodrygo.

The North London side have earmarked the Brazil international as a key arrival this summer, and a deal could be instigated by a high-profile sale that would shatter the Premier League giants’ record.

According to TalkSport, Arsenal are bracing themselves for a mammoth €85 million offer from Al-Nassr for Gabriel Martinelli.

With the Saudi Pro League window having opened on Thursday, there is anticipation that some big names will be heading to the division. Cristiano Ronaldo’s team are particularly eager to sign stars this summer as they seek to turn around their fortunes after struggling to win major titles since the Portuguese arrived.

Al-Nassr are hoping for a “quick” deal but transfer insider Ben Jacobs says that Arsenal are yet to receive a bid for Martinelli.

Any offer for the Brazil international will comfortably eclipse the Gunners’ record sale, which is Marc Overmars to Barcelona in 2000. They received €40m in that move, with the only other comparable moves in recent years the €38m that took Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool in 2017 and the €34m that saw Alexis Sanchez go to Man Utd.

Fabrizio Romano on Rodrygo to Arsenal

If Arsenal were to sell Martinelli, the money received would likely fuel a move for Real Madrid star Rodrygo.

While Mikel Arteta’s interest in the Bernabeu star is well established, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says that no move is expected imminently.

“What’s going on between Arsenal and Rodrygo Goes? I can confirm Arsenal’s position. It’s very clear. Arsenal love him,” Romano told his YouTube channel.

“At the moment, there’s no concrete negotiations, not even a bid. Why? Because he’s very expensive and everything for Rodrygo will be decided after the Club World Cup.

“Real Madrid will speak to Rodrygo’s camp in the next few days to clarify the situation. Remember, he will only leave if the player decides to do so. Otherwise, Real Madrid are not desperate to sell Rodrygo.

“For Arsenal, it will depend on the price and the financial package. At the moment, it’s still very early stages.”
