Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Sporting CP midfielder Dario Essugo.

The Portugal youth international has become the third Chelsea signing of this summer after Kendry Paez and Estevao, deals for whom were struck in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

The Blues' deal to sign Essugo, too, was completed in advance, so it will come as a bit of a surprise to some to see it only announced now. Sporting CP already confirmed in March that Essugo is on his way to Chelsea this summer.

The 20-year-old arrives as part of a double raid on the Lisbon giants, with wonderkid Geovany Quenda set to link up with the West London outfit in 2026. Quenda cost the Blues a whopping €52.14 million.

Essugo, for his part, is a much more economical signing, joining the club for a fee of €22.27m. The midfielder will arrive at Stamford Bridge in time for the Club World Cup.

Chelsea sign Essugo

Essugo is coming off a mixed loan spell at LaLiga side UD Las Palmas. Although he did enough to impress across 27 league appearances, it was insufficient to help the club stave off relegation to the second tier.

The youngster has signed a contract until 2033 with Chelsea, although it remains to be seen if he will stay with the club beyond this summer. Given the wealth of midfield options at Enzo Maresca's disposal, a loan could be beneficial.

The Club World Cup in the US will be used to assess the Portuguese's level before making a decision on how to proceed. Chelsea will face LAFC, Flamengo and ES Tunis in the tournament's group stage.

Chelsea kick off their Club World Cup campaign on June 16 with a game against LAFC, who qualified for the tournament via a playoff match with Mexico's Club America over the weekend after Club Leon were expelled from the competition.
