Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is now once again the favourite to succeed Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.

The Dutchman will finally return to his job as head coach next summer. Ten Hag has been out of work since his dismissal from Manchester United in October and is keen to return to the dugout for the new season.

The former Ajax manager was initially considered one of the primary candidates to replace Real Madrid-bound Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, only for the Bundesliga side to switch their focus.

Last week, the German top club chose to pursue a move for Cesc Fabregas as the main candidate instead. However, Fabrizio Romano now reports that Como did not give permission for a departure, which means Ten Hag has a good chance of getting the job in Germany again.

Como informed Bayer Leverkusen on Monday that Fabregas is still part of the club's plans and that there is no chance of a departure, reports Romano. The Spanish coach, who partially owns the Serie A outfit, is in a good place and firmly believes in Como's long-term plans.

Ten Hag set for Leverkusen?

Due to the decision of Como and Fabregas, Ten Hag is now back in pole position as far as Bayer Leverkusen are concerned.

The Bundesliga runners-up will say goodbye to Alonso after this season, with the Spanish coach in line to take the place of Carlo Ancelotti at his former club Real Madrid.

Although Ten Hag's work at Old Trafford was criticised, his successor Ruben Amorim hasn't been faring much better since his appointment in November, which suggests that he wouldn't be a terrible hire by Leverkusen.

In the past, Ten Hag impressively led Ajax to the semi-finals of the Champions League. Additionally, his Bundesliga experience is an asset. Ten Hag worked as a coach of the reserve team of Bayern Munich at the beginning of his career and speaks excellent German.
