Arsenal join race to sign Julian Alvarez

Arsenal have joined the race to sign Atletico Madrid centre forward Julian Alvarez during the upcoming summer transfer window, according to a shock report in Spain.
Mikel Arteta’s side are expected to sign a new striker ahead of the 2025-26 campaign and they have sounded out Alvarez as a potential option following his impressive debut season at Atletico Madrid.
That is according to Spanish outlet Marca, who claim that Arsenal are now the “strongest bidder” for Alvarez’s services, with the club’s new sporting director Andrea Berta pushing to complete a deal.
Berta was responsible for Alvarez’s move to the Wanda Metropolitano last year, during his time in charge of Atletico Madrid’s transfer dealings, and he is keen to bring the 25-year-old to north London this summer.
Alvarez scored 29 goals in 54 appearances across all competitions during his first season in Spain, and Liverpool are also interested in finalising a deal for the ex-Manchester City striker amid the uncertain future of Darwin Nunez.
However, while Arsenal are reportedly eager to rival Liverpool for Alvarez’s signature this summer, FootballTransfers understands that Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres remains their priority target.

Mikel Arteta on Arsenal’s pursuit of a new striker
Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Southampton on Sunday, Arteta admitted that his side must strengthen their attacking roster this summer.
“If you want to win major trophies, you have to be the best in the market, no? The teams that win have the best players, always, always at this level,” he told reporters.
“What we have, what is clear as well with the amount of injuries that we had in the front line, that we need a goal threat and we need the firepower out there.”
Arteta added: “Understanding that the context can change tomorrow, you know, and we cannot rely just on the numbers that we had before. And we have to add goals, we have to add creativity, we have to add numbers and that will be in different positions.
