The 26-year-old has been in contract talks with Liverpool for some time but is no closer to extending his deal.

Liverpool want to avoid the repeat of what happened with Trent Alexander-Arnold, who ran down his contract and joined Real Madrid on a free transfer.

Thus, if Konate doesn't sign a new contract by January, they are prepared to sell the centre back.

Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace is considered their preferred replacement for Konate.

Liverpool to sell Konate?

Real Madrid are considered favourites to sign Konate in 2026.

Despite signing Dean Huijsen, Alvaro Carreras and Alexander-Arnold this summer, Real Madrid are still not completely satisfied with their defensive options.

They plan to make at least one big defensive signing 2026 and Konate represents a bargain either in January for a reduced price or on a free transfer next summer.

Liverpool signed Konate from Leipzig in 2021 for €42 million.

He has since gone on to make almost 150 appearances for the club, scoring five goals and winning five trophies.

This includes the Premier League this past season. He also has a Champions League runners-up medal.

Konate has 26 caps for France. He is now 26.
