Arsenal have 'upped the ante' of their pursuit of Nico Williams, according to a report.

The Athletic Club winger is one of the most intriguing transfer opportunities of the upcoming window. The 21-year-old would have been a free agent this summer, but his side managed to convince him to pen a new deal in the winter.

However, in order to still allow him to get a big move, Williams was fitted with a release clause worth €50 million. Given that the Spain international is regarded as one of Europe's biggest talents, this appears to be a relatively affordable sum.

There is one problem, though. The youngster is said to already be on €200,000 a week at his current club and this has seen sides like Chelsea and Aston Villa back away from pursuing him in recent days.

Chelsea, in particular, are long-time admirers of Williams, having already considered signing him in the previous summer. It now appears, however, that the youngster could be heading to north London rather than the western parts of the city.

Arsenal make contact

At least that's according to GIVEMESPORT, which reports that Arsenal are 'upping the ante' when it comes to Williams. It is claimed that the Gunners have made contact with his representatives to test the waters regarding a summer move.

William's ability to play on both wings could make him a particularly attractive option to Mikel Arteta, who adores versatile players. Williams could be an upgrade on Gabriel Martinelli, who has fallen out of form and favour recently, on the left or he could provide much-needed cover for Bukayo Saka on the right.

It is claimed that Arsenal are 'seriously considering' triggering the Basque's release clause. It is furthermore asserted that Williams is asking for a massive pay rise and that convincing him to leave his boyhood club could prove difficult.
