Chelsea flop to Ange's angel: Bargain Werner deal a no-brainer for Spurs

Ange Postecoglou has heaped praise on Timo Werner and a permanent signing makes a lot of sense.

The RB Leipzig loanee has impressed back in the Premier League after joining Tottenham on a surprise loan in January. Though the German still has his obvious flaws, Werner is generally considered a success in north London, a far cry from his time with Chelsea.

With two goals and two assists in nine appearances so far for Spurs, Werner is a key part of Postecoglou's team and has been from the day he arrived. Quizzed about signing him permanently, the Australian refused to give a definitive answer but expressed his admiration for the 28-year-old.

"In terms of his future, I think like most players all these decisions will be made at the appropriate time,” Postecoglou said. “He’s been great for us. He was an important signing..."

"And it’s fair to say he’s made an impact in every game. Yeah, he’d probably like a couple more goals but at the same time, he’s an important part of our structure. I thought he was really good on the weekend. He has been in the last few games but I do think there’s more improvement in him as he understands our game more.”

Permanent signing a no-brainer

Tottenham reportedly have the option to make Werner's stay permanent for just €17 million, which is about half of his actual value. The German's Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently stands at €37.5 million.

At that price, signing Werner permanently is a no-brainer for Spurs given how well he has fit into Postecoglou's system. Though the sample size is very small, data analytics firm SciSports rate the winger as one of the best in his position in the Premier League.

In terms of his overall play, Werner ranks ninth among Premier League wingers. His finishing has so far been legitimately terrible, but his offensive contributions apart from that have been very solid.

Again, the sample size is small, but Werner is outperforming the likes of Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jeremy Doku so far at Tottenham. If he can become more clinical, he could turn out to be a spectacular signing for the north London club.

SciSports believe that Werner is Spurs' third-best player, illustrating how highly he is still rated despite his underwhelming recent seasons. Tottenham have been very shrewd with their business in recent years and signing Werner for a bargain €17m could be another masterstroke by Daniel Levy.
