Ross Barkley believes he can “add something” to England’s squad for this summer’s European Championship.

The 30-year-old has been one of the Premier League’s most impressive performers this season following his move to Luton Town last year, and Barkley has also been linked with a move to Manchester United after catching the eye in a new defensive midfield role.

The Luton midfielder has three goals and three assists in 20 league starts this campaign and team-mate Andros Townsend even compared him to Argentina legend Diego Maradona following his performances against Arsenal and Manchester City in December.

Furthermore, Barkley has recently been tipped for a late recall to the England squad ahead of the Euros in Germany.

What has Ross Barkley said?

When asked about his chances of being included in England’s squad during an interview with BBC Sport, the former Chelsea and Everton star admitted: “Why not? I feel like I'm a much better player now than I was when I was younger.

“I'm not going to lie, it's in the back of my mind, but I know there's a lot of competition for places in the England squad.

“I do back myself. I believe I can add something to the squad. I believe the lower midfield role for me, it's perfect for me now. I have a better understanding of the game.

“I can take risks, create assists and defensively I'm much more disciplined now.”

Barkley was later asked about where his future lies following links with a move to Man Utd. “I'm not too sure [about after this season],” he responded.

“I'm just trying to do my best for Luton, try and keep us in the league and see where I'm at at that point at the end of the season.

“From 30 to when I retire, I'm just going to enjoy this time now.”
