Liverpool have barged into the race to sign Donyell Malen, according to German media.

The Borussia Dortmund attacker has been in red-hot form since the Bundesliga winter break, scoring seven goals and assisting two in nine games. This massive upturn in form is a big surprise given that Malen was reportedly sulking during the earlier stages of this campaign, being fed up with his role under Edin Terzic and the general situation at BVB.

The Dutchman thus became the subject of intense January transfer links and he is once again making headlines now, though for different reasons. Rather than being linked with an exit due to being unhappy, Malen is now the subject of speculation in light of his impressive form.

Borussia Dortmund were happy to let the 24-year-old walk in the winter for €30 million, but they have already hiked up his asking price and if he keeps going on his current trajectory, he will only get more expensive. After reportedly valuing him at €40m-€50m at the end of February, BILD now reports that Malen could command as much as €60m in the summer.

Liverpool enter the fray

As FootballTransfers exclusively revealed in the winter, Man Utd held an interest in Malen in January and they still do now. This has also been confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, who recently asserted that “Man United have a good relationship with his agents."

Now, Liverpool have also entered the race, according to the above-mentioned report. The German outlet asserts that the Reds are 'very keen' on the versatile attacker, who can play centrally and out wide.

The interest in Malen is intriguing in light of the recent inquest into Cody Gakpo's underwhelming Liverpool performances. Malen's compatriot and former PSV teammate has been accused of playing 'like the game is in slow motion' and the BVB star could be brought in as a potential upgrade.

Malen is also seen as an upgrade on Antony at Man Utd, who had actually wanted to sign Gakpo before ultimately settling on the Brazilian in 2022. The 24-year-old would be open to a Premier League, having previously played in Arsenal's Hale End academy for a couple of years.
