Liverpool have been keeping tabs on a number of Bayer Leverkusen stars with a view to potentially making a move in the summer, according to a report.

The futures of Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen seem entwined in one way or another. The latters' coach, Xabi Alonso, is the favourite to take over from Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season and, despite Bayern threatening to ruin the Spaniard's return to Anfield, it seems an opportunity to good to turn down.

Alonso's Leverkusen have been nothing short of spectacular this term and this has made several of their players sought-after commodities. Indeed, speculation about which players could follow Alonso to Anfield has abounded ever since Klopp announced his departure, and this speculation was further fuelled by Jeremie Frimpong on Tuesday.

Asked by Dutch media about potentially joining the Reds, the right-back said: "Liverpool? Great club, with history. That would be great. Who knows what the future will bring.”

However, Frimpong isn't the only Werkself star liked by Liverpool. According to journalist Dean Jones, the Reds have also been keeping tabs on Piero Hincapie, Florian Wirtz and Edmond Tapsoba for some time.

"[Liverpool] are known admirers of Piero Hincapie, and made tentative enquiries about the Ecuadorian last summer, and their scouts have, like just about every other club in Europe, been aware of Florian Wirtz for a number of years," he told CaughtOffside.

“Those two, in particular, are interesting cases, given their age and the high ceilings they possess. Hincapie would fit the bill as a left-sided defender – an area Liverpool have been actively looking – while Wirtz’s versatility and creativity, as well as the fact he doesn’t turn 21 until May, mark him out as one of the best young attackers in Europe."

“I think either would improve Liverpool’s squad in the summer, and I know that another Leverkusen player, Edmond Tapsoba, was liked by the Reds in the past. At 25, his best years are still very much ahead of him.”
