Former Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is silencing his critics with stellar performances at Marseille this season.

Aubameyang joined the Blues last summer on the back of an excellent second half to the 2021-22 campaign at Barcelona.

Having scored 11 goals in 13 La Liga starts, Thomas Tuchel signed the striker to replace Timo Werner at Stamford Bridge.

The German head coach had previously worked with Aubameyang at Borussia Dortmund, helping him to become one of the game's deadliest finishers.

However, Tuchel was sacked within days of bringing the Gabon international to the west London club.

Instead, Aubameyang spent the remainder of the season under Graham Potter and Frank Lampard, both of whom regularly left him out of the side.

In a turbulent debut, and only, season at Chelsea, Aubameyang registered just three goals in all competitions and was often criticised for a poor attitude and work ethic.

He moved to Marseille on a three-year deal this summer, where he is proving that he has plenty more football left in the tank.

Aubameyang at Marseille

Aubameyang is not the first striker to make Chelsea look silly in recent times.

Look at Romelu Lukaku; he is scoring goals for fun for Jose Mourinho's Roma this season.

In Aubameyang's case, he was previously excellent for Barcelona and has since been excellent for Marseille. That is not a coincidence.

Indeed, 12 goals and six assists in 17 starts for Marseille shows that he not only remains a fantastic finisher, but he is also capable of playing for the team.

This begs the question, do the Blues have to look at themselves when it comes to their strikers not succeeding?

It could be that Chelsea consistently fail to provide them with the platform to succeed.
