Marcus Rashford’s poor form this season has led to criticism and calls for him to be dropped by Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag being suggested two players that can replace him by a former club icon.

Rashford scored a career-high 30 goals in all competitions last year, leading to United handing him a long-term contract putting the 26-year-old amongst the highest earners in the squad.

However, their loyalty has yet to be repaid by the England international, with Rashford scoring just once in 16 appearances this season and leaving United toothless in attack.

United and struggles in front of goal have left Ten Hag’s side sitting sixth in the Premier League and on the verge of crashing out the Champions League, leading to former Red Devil Lee Sharpe admitting his doubts on Rashford’s credibility as a number nine.

"It’s frustrating because they are creating a lot of chances – enough chances to see games off," Sharpe told Offers.Bet. “I always thought Rashford would be a good number nine, but I’m questioning that after watching him for the periods that I’ve seen him there.

"The age Rashford is now he should be producing week in week out, and he seems a bit inconsistent at the moment. It’s difficult to pick one player out when the whole team is inconsistent, but I would like to see a bit more from Rashford in his decision making."

Rashford has not been the only cause of frustration with United’s attackers, with Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay the only players to score more than one goal in the Premier League this season.

United’s big money signing Rasmus Hojlund has failed to find the net in any of his nine league games and Sharpe suggested Premier League hotshots Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins as two solutions to Ten Hag’s goalscoring issue.

"I think Ivan Toney would be good at most of the top six or eight clubs," Sharpe said. "I think he’s proven what a strong centre forward he is, how good he is holding the ball up, doesn’t get injured much and is someone you consistently name in most teams.
