Scott McTominay looks set to stay and fight for his place at Manchester United according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.

McTominay has been restricted to just two Premier League starts this season as Erik ten Hag has preferred Casemiro at the base of his midfield, sometimes with Bruno Fernandes - a No.10 by trade - for company.

With Sofyan Amrabat signed on loan from Fiorentina this summer and Hannibal Mejbri also emerging, the Scotland international's days at Old Trafford looked to be numbered.

Fulham tried to move for McTominay on the final day of the summer transfer window before pulling the plug on Joao Palhinha's move to Bayern Munich, while West Ham had been interested in the Scot as well as his Man Utd teammate Harry Maguire.

Now, after coming off the bench to rescue a 2-1 win over Brentford with a brace on Saturday, McTominay has taken his United career a step in the direction he wants it to go in.

'McTominay only wanted to stay at Man Utd'

"It's not been an entirely easy season for McTominay with so much competition in United’s midfield now, and we know he had chances to leave Old Trafford in the summer," Romano said in his latest daily briefing.

"There was interest from West Ham, and also Fulham were pushing in the final days of the summer transfer window, but McTominay only wanted to stay at United.

"Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel is also a big admirer of McTominay… but there was no concrete approach there, he's just a player Bayern and Tuchel appreciate. Let's see what happens with McTominay now, but a performance like this, with two hugely important goals, could be key for his confidence."

Whilst Bayern might just appreciate McTominay for now, they could be tempted to make a move in January. Palhinha has signed a new contract at Fulham with no release clause, and Bayern would have to bid more than the £55m they did in the summer.
