Manchester United have tabled an official offer for Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella, according to The Athletic.

The Red Devils have had to make some late adjustments to their transfer priorities after Luke Shaw suffered a long-term muscle injury in training, with backup option Tyrell Malacia also currently on the treatment table. This leaves them shorthanded in the left-back position, something that Erik ten Hag and company are now scrambling to address.

While right-back Diogo Dalot has shown himself to be a capable deputy out on the left, it seems that the Ten Hag is keen to add a more natural player for that position, which has seen Man Utd linked with the likes of Marcos Alonso and Sergio Reguilon. Lyon's Nicolas Tagliafico, meanwhile, is pushing for a reunion with Ten Hag, as revealed by FootballTransfers.

Most prominent among United's candidates to fill Shaw's role, however, is Chelsea's Marc Cucurella from Chelsea. Indeed, The Athletic reports that he is seen as a great fit for Ten Hag's system internally and that he is currently the club's number one target despite his failure to live up to his hefty price tag since making the €65.3 million switch from Brighton.

Now, Man Utd have tabled their first offer for the Spaniard.

United want a loan

As things stand, Manchester United are solely interested in finding a temporary solution given that Shaw is expected to return eventually this season. With this in mind, they have tabled a loan offer for Cucurella, reports The Athletic.

The report states: "The Stamford Bridge side have responded to their Premier League rivals and talks are ongoing. United’s offer is for an initial loan and the clubs are discussing various parameters around that."

Fabrizio Romano, meanwhile, says that Man Utd have offered a loan fee "in excess of £2m. Chelsea want more, talks ongoing to make it happen. Cucurella, open to joining United since Saturday. Deal on."
