Newcastle have sounded out a move for Inter Milan defender Federico Dimarco as an option to bolster their defence with someone who can play multiple roles.

We understand that an approach has been made by representatives of the club after their success in bringing Sandro Tonali in from AC Milan, with Newcastle asking the Serie A club their valuation of the Italy international.

Dimarco changed agency in February and is now with Roc Nation, who have good ties to Premier League clubs. The 25-year-old’s contract expires at the San Siro in 2027 and it is not clear yet whether he would be open to a move to St James’ Park.

But we are told talks are in the initial stages and a lot would depend on the asking price Inter provide.

Dimarco is an extremely versatile left-sided defender who can play as a wing-back or in a back four. He is also comfortable on the left of a three-man central defence and further up as a left midfielder.

He would therefore make a lot of financial sense for Eddie Howe.

Saint-Maximin linked to Saudi Arabia

It comes after our exclusive which revealed that Allan Saint-Maximin is being eyed by clubs from Saudi Arabia. We understand that the winger is open to leaving Newcastle ahead of next season.

The Frenchman, who is on a €4.5million salary, has a desire to find a club in the Serie A if he was to leave Newcastle this window. Indeed, Saudi Pro League has been mooted as an option, with approaches made, but so far the player is not willing to make the move to a Pro League side.

Newcastle are looking at a right-sided centre-back. As we exclusively revealed, Newcastle had made an approach for Joachim Andersen, who they believe can deputise Fabian Schar next season. They have been put off by Crystal Palace’s asking price, however.

A lot of the noise around his future has previously come from the player’s side.
