But in the 89th minute, Josh Simms pulled the Merseysiders level to earn them a much-needed point.

The result means that Chelsea finish the weekend in 10th place. It was particularly frustrating as they could have cut their deficit to fourth-placed Tottenham to nine points had they won the game.

After the game, Boehly was caught on camera, raging. “s*** f***ing game,” to supporters outside.

He then walked between two security guards as the fans, who initially laughed nervously at his response, thanked him.

Chelsea, who have endured a torrid campaign, have recently been on something of a good run - they had beaten Leicester, Borussia Dortmund, and Leeds in their last three games, but could not see themselves to victory against the Toffees.

After the game, Graham Potter admitted that the side were frustrated not to come away with the win: “We’re really disappointed because we’ve dropped two points at home. We wanted to win and you saw the intention of the team.

“There was a lot of positive things in the performance but ultimately we’ve not defended well enough and to concede two goals, it’s not easy to win the game. That’s the disappointing thing for us.”

Potter speaks of Chelsea frustration

He added: “The boys are disappointed. I will keep the conversation private but the boys were frustrated because they put a lot into the game and wanted to win.

“As I said, performance-wise, it was quite strong but we’re really frustrated because we can’t concede the goals we did and expect to win games.”
