Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Dutch winger, who has been linked to the likes of Newcastle and Arsenal, still has ambitions to join Erik ten Hag’s side and that a deal worth €55million-€60million could be struck.

As FootballTransfers has reported before, the most likely destination for the young star is Man Utd - but it remains to be seen whether they would be willing to splash the cash this upcoming window, in January, or bide their time and wait until the summer to make their marquee signings.

Romano wrote on Twitter: "Cody Gakpo hasn't changed his mind on Manchester United. He was keen on joining last summer and this is still the case, discussions with his agents have always been positive.

"It's on Man United now, time to decide internally about €55-60m investment."

The shock departure of Cristiano Ronaldo has meant that the Red Devils are in need of another attacker to fill in the spot.

Gakpo has played up-front for his current side PSV before, while he is also used on the left wing.

The 23-year-old has also been linked to the likes of Leeds and Everton over the past year too- but his stellar form this campaign has seen his name rise to the heights of being watched by the Premier League’s elite, while even Real Madrid are said to have him on their radar.

Gakpo, who scored three goals for the Netherlands during the World Cup in Qatar as they made a quarterfinal place, has netted 55 goals in 159 games in all competitions for the Eredivisie club.

Van Nistelrooy prefers summer move

PSV boss and former Man Utd star Ruud van Nistelrooy touched on the prospect of Gakpo moving on in recently, saying that he will allow him to leave when the right opportunity arises.

He told Voetbal International: “It is wonderful how he has showcased himself.

“I enjoyed watching him [at the World Cup] and he deserves this because of how he has behaved, how he has continued to work and continued to perform. I was able to help him from very close by and that makes me proud. And then I’ll give him his path when it comes.”

He continued: “If I have the choice, I prefer the summer, but it can also be now. You just know there comes a time when you can’t say no.”
