De Jong was a big target for Manchester United, where Erik ten Hag made him a priority target, and the club spent 17 weeks chasing him, but were unsuccessful in their pursuit.

Later in the window, Chelsea and Bayern Munich were also interested in bringing the player over to their respective clubs, but were unable to get a deal over the line.

Now, De Jong has spoken about the transfer saga and what the future holds for him now that he has remained at Barcelona, his dream club.

De Jong speaks on transfer links

"I was calm. I decided, in May, that I wanted to stay. My opinion has never changed during all this period - I remained calm," the Dutchman said to Ziggo Sport this past week.

But then you know that the pressure would start coming. Yes, from the newspapers, from the president. From everywhere in fact. But I wanted to stay at Barça, so it never baffled me."

De Jong hasn’t been a starter for much of the season at Barcelona, something which is of concern to him and he wishes to see that change.

Reports from Spain this past week have suggested De Jong is angry with his current situation at Barcelona with regards to playing time and wants more assurances.

If he doesn’t get more time on the pitch, he will consider leaving the club: "I knew he would play fewer minutes at the beginning of the season. I want to be a starter again.

“Against Bayern, I wasn't a starter and I hope to be against Real Madrid. Maybe he already has decided, but usually we don't know until the day of the game," he concluded.
