Chelsea have lined up Ajax's Edson Alvarez as their latest target as they look to bolster their midfield before the transfer window closes.

The Blues have already spent more than £200 million this summer after confirming the £70m arrival of Wesley Fofana from Leicester and they have not finished splashing the cash yet.

Alvarez has established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe since signing for Ajax in 2019 and the Mexican international has three years left on his contract.

Chelsea are believed to have made a bid of €50m for the 24-year-old, as well as offering to quadruple his wages, and the player is reportedly demanding to leave as he is unsure whether he will get an opportunity like this again.

However, Ajax are refusing to sell after seeing Antony depart in recent days to Manchester United for €100m, having already lost the likes of Sebastien Haller, Lisandro Martinez and Ryan Gravenberch this summer.

The Dutch side had previously blocked approaches from Rennes and Newcastle but a move to Chelsea could force their hand despite Ajax boss Gerald Schreuder claiming the club could not afford to lose any more key players.

Chelsea set for a busy deadline day

Thomas Tuchel is desperate to sign both a forward and a defensive midfielder before the window closes as he looks to balance his squad following an underwhelming start to the season.

Should Ajax resist Chelsea's advances, the Blues could return with a move for Frenkie de Jong, having enquired about the Barcelona midfielder earlier in the summer.

A move for De Jong could be complicated by the issue of his unpaid wages at Barcelona but the Catalan side are looking to cash in on the Dutchman so a deal could be possible.

Chelsea are already in negotiations with Barca to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and a deal is expected to be struck for the forward, with Marcos Alonso potentially going the other way.

Chelsea are also still looking to push through moves for the likes of Arsen Zakharyan and Josko Gvardiol while Hakim Ziyech could still leave before the deadline.
