Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has said that he believes that there is a core of players “good enough” to play for the club but has warned that it will take several transfer windows to return the club to where it should be.

Despite being touted as potential title contenders at the start of the season following the arrivals of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo, Man Utd have endured their worst Premier League season in history.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November, but interim boss Rangnick has failed to get any more out of a squad that has dressing room issues.

A lack of quality has been cited as an issue for Man Utd’s struggles, and while the German would appear to agree, he still believes there are players at the club who are good enough to restore it to its previous glory.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s trip to Crystal palace in the final Premier League match of the season, he said: “I still strongly believe that there is a core of players who are top - good enough to play for this club.

“If we bring in the right players, mentality players, I am positive we will be able to bring this club back to the top. Maybe not possible in one window, but next two or three.”

The responsibility of finding these players will fall to incoming manager Erik ten Hag, who is set to take the lead on recruitment over the summer months.

The current Ajax boss, meanwhile, could also look to promote from within. One candidate impressing for the youth teams this season has been 17-year-old Alejandro Garnacho, but he may miss out on a second Premier League appearance at the weekend.

“Unfortunately, Alejandro was ill in the last couple of days. Today was his first back. He might be back but we’re not sure if he is physically fit to play,” Rangnick said over the exciting youngster.

Garnacho notably scored seven goals in Man Utd’s run to the FA Youth Cup, including a double on 11 May against Nottingham Forest in the final.
