Sergio Reguilon has spent the last two seasons at Tottenham Hotspur, but his previous club, Real Madrid, still have a buyback clause for the left-back.

When Real Madrid were open to selling the player, there was plenty of interest in the Spaniard, including from clubs like Manchester United.

However, many clubs were put off by the fact that Real Madrid were inserting a buyback clause in any contract for a sale, leaving Tottenham an open path towards getting their man.

United, in particular, felt as though it was illogical to have the buyback clause, and felt as though their club had too much prestige to not have total control of a player they signed.

The move ended up costing Tottenham €30 million, and he has frequently featured in Tottenham’s plans over the last two seasons, playing under both Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

Could Reguilon go back to Real Madrid?

There is a buyback clause that would expire at the end of this transfer window – and if Real Madrid are eager to see their former player return, they would have to pay €40 million.

Reports from Spain recently have emerged suggesting Real Madrid are willing to activate the clause and bring back the Spaniard to the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer.

Additionally, certain reports in England also suggest Tottenham would be open to selling the player, with him struggling to adapt under Conte being a problem.

Prior to Tottenham, Reguilon played at several clubs on loan, including in the lower divisions of Spanish football at Logroñés.

He did, however, spend a season at Sevilla in the 2019-20 season, where he started most matches under manager Julen Lopetegui, and ended up winning the Europa League in that campaign, beating Inter in the final.

It was that season that prompted interest in the player, and a move to Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham side materialized later that summer.

Reguilon has also played for Spain, making his debut in 2020 and has six caps in total.
